What Will I Write About? -Jill, Aged 11

As I start a new blog in an attempt to improve my writing skills for my journalism course, I am once again faced with that age old problem-what in the world do i have to write about!

I use to never have this problem. Our teacher in primary school always encouraged us to write. We each had a wine coloured, hardback copy with a wine ribbon page marker. In it, we had to write one page every single night for homework. Just one page about absolutely anything. The more descriptive and imaginative the better. A challenge that I was always eager to fulfil, relished even. I could write about anything, and boy do I mean anything.

I came across said wine-coloured journal today and realised that it's aim then is exactly that of this blog now-to further my writing skills, expand my knowledge and most importantly spur my passion for writing.

This is one entry from my journal that will inspire me in times of despairing writers block.

What Will I Write About~by Jill Mc Mahon, aged 11yrs
What will I write about? My Maths?
No, that's too boring.
Will I write about the story in Irish?
Oh God, I feel like snoring!

Will I write about going back to school?
No, there's not much to say.
Will I write about my favourite food?
No, I'll leave that for another day.

Will I write about a forest
With all its trees and plants
And all its wonderful wildlife
from squirrels and deer to ants?

Will I write about a song I heard
That is now in my head,
About Harry Potter
Or another book I've read?

Will I write about sunshine?
Will I write about rain?
Will I write about how I cut my hand
And how I hate the pain?

Will I write about the stars,
The sky, the moon, the sun?
I need something to fill this page,
But now that I look, it's already done!
